The Monarch Academy

Monarch Academy, a public charter school in Glen Burnie, Md., is operated by The Children’s Guild and guided by their philosophy of Transformation Education. The school design and curriculum emphasizes a rigorous, project-based instructional program that integrates the arts across the curriculum. The school opened in 2009 and will grow to serve students in kindergarten through grade eight by 2012.

The school design is based in Expeditionary Learning, a model for comprehensive school reform that emphasizes high achievement through active learning, character growth and teamwork. Students spend much of their time engaged in learning expeditions which are in-depth studies of a single topic that engage students in comprehensive research of a subject, hands-on learning experiences and unique presentations that address authentic audiences in the community.
